Wish I could help, but mine doesn't even power up or down. Have you tried connecting the RCA cables and booting in Safe Mode? That would tell you if the video is coming through your video cable or not.
You need an external hard drive with at least as much space as you have content on your PS3. For example, my 80GB hard drive was getting full as I upgraded to a 500GB drive, so I used a 100GB external hard drive. Plug the external hard drive into one of the USB ports on the front of the PS3. Then go to: SETTINGS>SYSTEM SETTINGS>BACKUP UTILITY. From there you can follow the on-screen instructions. The more content you have to backup, the longer the backup will take.
