Several times over few months I put the iPad in Recovery mode (using iTunes) and the digitizer starting responding again. Finally the digitizer no longer responded even after being put in recovery mode or after several hard resets (holding "power" and "Home" buttons for 10 seconds). So this time I performed a Restore from iTunes hoping that would clear up any problems. However, the digitizer still didn't respond and the iPad was stuck on the "Hello" screen (photo 1). I then ordered some tools and used them to take the iPad apart using the instructions on iFixIt.com. I cleaned the contacts with isopropanol and reseated the cable as shown in photo 2.
