    • Sliding the small tab along the left side of the MinoHD releases the flip-out USB connector for easy docking/charging.

    • When done interfacing, the USB connector tucks in flush with the top edge of the device.

  4. Flip MinoHD Teardown: stap 4, afbeelding 1 van 2 Flip MinoHD Teardown: stap 4, afbeelding 2 van 2
    • Use the sharp edge of a plastic opening tool to peel the two labels off the bottom of the MinoHD to reveal two hidden screws.

    • Remove the two Phillips screws securing the front panel to the outer case.

  5. Flip MinoHD Teardown: stap 5, afbeelding 1 van 3 Flip MinoHD Teardown: stap 5, afbeelding 2 van 3 Flip MinoHD Teardown: stap 5, afbeelding 3 van 3
    • Begin the disassembly by inserting a plastic opening tool (with the edge pointed toward the aluminum outer case) between the front and outer cases near the bottom of either edge of the MinoHD.

    • Do not try to pry between the front and outer cases along the top edge of the MinoHD.

    • Continue running the plastic opening tool in the seam between the front and outer cases until the left, right, and bottom edges are free.

  6. Flip MinoHD Teardown: stap 6, afbeelding 1 van 3 Flip MinoHD Teardown: stap 6, afbeelding 2 van 3 Flip MinoHD Teardown: stap 6, afbeelding 3 van 3
    • Push the front panel toward the top edge of the MinoHD to release it from the mounting tabs along its top inner edge.

    • Don't try to remove the front panel just yet! It is still attached to the logic board by a small ribbon cable.

    • Carefully rotate the front panel away from the rest of the MinoHD.

    • Pull the control panel ribbon cable away from its socket on the logic board.

    ahhh i need help!

on the actual mino when i opened it the socket snaped off.the socket on the casing is fine but not the one on the board. what do i do??? please help

    • There's not too much interesting going on inside the front panel.

    • Capacitive sensors under each of the control symbols (play, back, etc.) provide the logic board with control data, while small LEDs mounted to the logic board (shown in red) under each "button" project light through the front panel to provide their illumination.

  8. Flip MinoHD Teardown: stap 8, afbeelding 1 van 2 Flip MinoHD Teardown: stap 8, afbeelding 2 van 2
    • Use a plastic opening tool to carefully lift the top edge of the display out of its bracket.

    • It may be necessary to use a metal spudger to release a small piece of film stuck between the LCD and the display bracket.

A guitar pick works great, if you do not own a plastic opening tool.

    • Remove the four silver Phillips screws attaching the logic board to the outer case.

    • To remove the logic board, you must first de-solder the leads of both microphones from the logic board. When soldering on a circuit board, be sure not to heat up the connection excessively.

    • Use a pair of tweezers to gently pull each lead as you heat up the joint with the tip of a soldering iron.

    • Repeat this process to remove all four microphone leads. Their locations are boxed in orange on the first picture.

  12. Flip MinoHD Teardown: stap 12, afbeelding 1 van 3 Flip MinoHD Teardown: stap 12, afbeelding 2 van 3 Flip MinoHD Teardown: stap 12, afbeelding 3 van 3
    • Carefully maneuver the logic board out of the outer case, minding the cables still connecting the two components.

    • To gain more clearance, remove the small strip of black tape securing the USB ribbon cable to the battery bracket.

    • Use a pair of tweezers to pull the USB ribbon cable connector away from its socket.

    • Pull the battery connector out of its socket on the logic board.

    • Remove the two small silver Phillips screws securing the battery to the outer case.

    • Use a plastic opening tool to pry the battery up off the outer case.

    • The MinoHD sips two hours worth of power from the internal 3.7V, 1150 mAh Li-ion battery weighing in at 30 grams (including bracket).

    • Coincidentally, that's the same battery capacity as the iPhone 3G.

  14. Flip MinoHD Teardown: stap 14, afbeelding 1 van 3 Flip MinoHD Teardown: stap 14, afbeelding 2 van 3 Flip MinoHD Teardown: stap 14, afbeelding 3 van 3
    • Remove the three Phillips screws securing both microphones to the outer case.

    • The microphone assembly on the left also houses a small speaker for audio during video playback. It connects to the board via two spring-loaded pressure contacts.

    • Lift both microphones off the inner surface of the outer case.

  15. Flip MinoHD Teardown: stap 15, afbeelding 1 van 3 Flip MinoHD Teardown: stap 15, afbeelding 2 van 3 Flip MinoHD Teardown: stap 15, afbeelding 3 van 3
    • Remove the four Phillips screws securing the aluminum USB bracket to the outer case.

    • Use a pair of tweezers to pull the flip-up USB axle away from the outer case.

    • Once the axle clears the outer case, the flip-up USB connector may be ejected at high speed. Wear safety glasses.

For Step 11 - YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DE-SOLDER THE MIC LEADS. Just be very careful when lifting the logic board and you'll see access to the 2 phillips screws underneath. Remove those and you'll have plenty of room to remove the battery.

    projectcartv - Antwoord

Got mine working after replacing the battery, but, it is out of focus. Actually, it is now more like a macro focus. Any ideas what to do? If I play old movies still on camera they are fine, so it appears something went haywire on the take apart.

Same thing happened to me. I'm guessing you mistakenly unscrewed the two screws in the center of the board underneath screen when you were taking the board off. Those screws attach the camera to the board and the camera itself is aligned by four little "feet" on each corner which go into corresponding holes in the board. If the camera isn't seated in the holes just right the image will be blurry. Once I noticed my camera wasn't seated on the board correctly - and I'm talking about only a millimeter or less on one corner - I just unscrewed the camera, realigned, screwed it back in and everything was clear again. Hope that helps you (or someone)

Do you have any idea if the Samsung 934 KMCMG0000M-B998 8 GB NAND flash memory can be mounted on an external USB? My Flip cam died, but I would like to extract the final videos.

nigelparry - Antwoord

nigelparry, did you figure out any way to mount that flash memory anywhere else in order to recover the camer's contents?

My Flip Mino HD stopped working (wouldn't turn on) after just a couple days of taking it out of the box. I followed up to step 13 (removed battery), then reconnected the battery and re-assembled it. I was flabbergasted when it turned on after I pressed the power button. I think disconnecting/reconnecting the battery is what reset it (had tried pressing the 'reset" button in the tripod socket but that had not worked for me). Thanks for saving my Flip from the trash!

Just to add that, other than a minor difference (improvement maybe?) on the USB port's mechanics, and the flash chip being an klmag4eehm-b101 , the MinoPro ( MP2240 sold through corporate channels by Cisco ) is identical, and can be repaired by following this same guide.

This was all not as easy as described. I ended up tearing the data cable and breaking a small piece of the retaining flap, %#*!^@. I had the hardest time trying to get the cable back in.

My problem was that the camera turned on and held a charge just fine, but I couldn't properly reset the thing and it always said it had zero memory space, but zero videos on it. Now it won't turn on, probably bc the video cable is damaged.

And of course, the Flip is no longer made and Cisco has discontinued service. No idea what to do now or where to take it. Any suggestions?

lybjenny - Antwoord

well, i managed to do the same thing as you did just on different parts.

on step 12 i ripped the ribbon cable and step 5 i ripped the socket of the logic board.

i am going to go to batteries plus soon and i will try to see if they can repair it or if they have any spare parts. besides that my advice would just be to throw the thing out unless they are able to help. it sucks that it costed so much yet just stopped working on the 1st week.

Wow. First comment in almost 4 years.

Anyway, I recently obtained a Cisco Flip minoHD (3rd gen.) and the light stayed red.. forever. Tried the paper clip trick, nothing.

Decided to follow this guide and see what was inside. In particular to see if I could re-purpose the gorgeous screen. If anyone has any guides or ideas, I’d love to hear them.

This guide is fantastic, except lacking one thing; the isolation padding. I neglected to take photos during my teardown (my bad).

The battery was bulged which is a bad sign. Well on eBay someone was selling a battery replacement so I went ahead and got one.

WORKS GREAT. Happily Charging away. Splash screen comes up. Device is immediately recognized in Windows, shows DCIM, FlipShare install files etc.

Now to leave the motherboard exposed and play around with probe points (I2C for instance) and what the 5 pinholes are for. May attach a header here and see if it possible to get it to work as an external screen, or live camera.

Thank you all. Great site.
