Mijn probleem

About a good six to seven months ago, in the dead of winter, my Mid 2010 MacBook Pro started telling me that the battery needed servicing soon. Well, to be honest, I didn't really notice until one day in the early spring of this year. That day, the computer started losing 5% battery life per minute, jumping from 25 to 5% capacity in roughly 5 minutes when I was using my scanner to scan some materials for college. Then it happened. The dreaded "replace battery" appeared in the corner of the display, along with the image of a dead battery. How did I know it was broken? Simple enough, where as when the computer held a charge, now it simply wouldn't charge at all.

Before accepting the worst, I tried clearing the NVRAM and messing about with all the settings that could produce a battery read error, but to no avail. It was toast. After an embarrassing foray into the world of dependant computer repair trying to find local businesses that could fix it (barring traveling to an Apple store far away from home), I stumbled across this site, and found the confidence to perform a self-repair as I waited for my tools and replacement to arrive. I didn't wait long, in about a week I recieved my kit, and I was all set to see what my battery inside the case looked like. I was not disappointed, thank you!

Mijn oplossing

The repair was simple enough, remove case screws in the back, lift up the case, take out the two differing length screws that lock the battery down, separate the battery chip from its board with the spudger, replace the battery with the new one, repeat the steps in reverse order. The screws are tiny...but the magnetic tools and a bright temporary container make this repair a total snap. I noticed that my battery was more than broken upon removal, it was cracked and protruding from the plastic shell on frayed edges. It was well and truly done performing its task, with no more cycles left, and unable to maintain any life at all. Ignoring the "do not remove" battery sticker ironically placed atop the shattered battery was the best thing I've ever done. I saved money and time waiting for repairs, and now I'll always make time to fix something like this myself.

Mijn advies

Self-repair is not the huge, over-complicated thing that normal repair companies, and even Apple will tell you. With the right guide, the right tools, enough time and a clean work area, one can fix essentially any electronic themselves. Don't believe the scare tactics, learn your parts, ask other repairers for help, save time and money, and become self-sufficient in your repairs! You really won't regret it.
