Mijn probleem
My PS3 died. The infamous Yellow Light of Death (YLOD, general hardware malfunction). As with most YLOD's it was probably the GPU, so I ordered this kit. It was the right call. I opened up my PS3, and pulled the motherboard off the heatsink, and low and behold. The GPU only had thermal paste globbed onto maybe one half of the surface. And to wonder why it can go so bad!

One thing I noticed right away is that my specific model CECHHxx (mine was 01) didn't have an instruction guide. In fact the guide on ifixit is for the launch model, which is VERY different than the CECHH model, it made things a little confusing but I eventually figured it out.
The repair was a success!... sort of. I got it to boot up again and and tested out Pacman Championship Edition DX to see how it held up. I turned off the PS3 to put the rest of the parts back together, and BAM YLOD again. I figured I didn't reflow it enough (I was overly cautious), otherwise I probably would have gotten better results.
I will make a second attempt once I get the motivation to open that sucker back up again.
Mijn advies
My suggestion is to get some lead-free no clean flux and reflux your GPU so you can heat up your GPU with little worry about destroying the old flux. That specific type of flux costs around 10 bucks. Hopefully one day iFixit can include it in their kit.
If you'd rather pass up on that, there is a user on EBAY that sells their service to reball the GPU (which would be a permanent fix) for about 65 or 70 USD at the moment. If you'd rather not pay 50 for the kit here but instead just go the extra 10 or 20 for a full proper reball, then that would be a good option.
