My gen 5 iPod needed a new battery
The video and spudger tools opened up the ipod very easily. When I got the cover off, two of the tiniest screws I ever saw tumbled out. I figured out one of them was from the hold switch and one from the hard drive, and so I took the opportunity to fix the switch while it was exposed. I freaked out however, when I got the new battery out and it *seemed* like the ribbon cable was the wrong length. I sent in a complaint about that, and a very patient person figured out that I was fooled by the new battery having the cable folded over on one side of the battery casing, I guess to make shipping easier. Once un-folded from the battery, the unit proved to be exactly right.
The original battery from Apple has a part number of 616-0230, model number EC008-1. iFixit's Replacement battery has a different number, 616-0229 , but this IS the right battery. Hopefully, that info clears up any uncertainty you might have when deciding to buy the battery replacement kit. Thanks, Matt Dyatt, for patiently figuring out why the cables seemed wrong but were right.
