Mijn probleem

I suspect that baby drool in the dock connector caused some arcing when the phone was connected to the charger as was evident by the scorch markings on the power/data cable and iphone dock connector. Consequently, the phone would not play music with onboard speakers (always thought it was docked), charging heated the phone more than usual (and took longer) and the phone wouldn't hold a charge (maybe 8 hours idle).

Mijn oplossing

Dismantling the phone and removing the existing connector was fairly smooth. There are many more adhesive glue points than I expected, but as long as you are confident you have the correct number of screws removed, you can pry slowly and steadily to remove the ribbon cable, dock connector and microphone grommet.

Mijn advies

Pay attention to the adhesive covers on the replacement part, there are several and they help hold cables in position as you replace components. The adhesive covers were not part of the ifixit.com instruction set. Watch a couple videos of the dismantle and of course the assembly. This one bit of advice that wasn't commented on in any of the videos I watched was, "avoid touching the camera lens once the back is off... and/or remember to clean both camera and back lenses before you reinstall the back."
