Had some fun, learned some things, gained confidence, but not successful

Mijn probleem

Symptoms were a dead bluetooth and the Late 2008 MacBook Pro 5,1. will not sleep properly. It stays real hot when it is supposed to be sleeping even with the cover closed. I can't leave this computer sleeping without the power connected. The battery will be run down in no time. It must be shut down.

Mijn oplossing

I replaced the wifi/bluetooth board successfully. But it didn't fix the problem. I now notice that there is no iSight recognized either. I'm thinking it might be the iSight/Airport cable now.

I also found that whoever worked on this machine previously did a hatchet job on the screws that hold the display hinge. It looks like someone tried to turn six 6 mm torx screws into six flat head screws by grinding across the top of the screws. Doesn't look like there is a current source for replacement screws and it also needs a new battery, so I'm not going to attempt to put a new cable in which is a new level of difficulty (removing the display with a heat gun).

It helps to have the right diagnosis. Even though I was not successful, I had a lot of fun. The iFixit tools that I purchased were a pleasure to use.
