Mijn probleem
I love my mac mini, I bought the 2012 model with a quad core i7 and have been very pleased with it. I decided from the get go to load it up with 16gb of Crucial memory to max it out. But after a while, reading all the articles of how much faster SSD drives were I began feeling that maybe I should buy one of those as well. In came IFIXIT' Mac Mini Dual Drive Kit.... when I read that I could simply add a second drive to my mac mini and transfer the contents from one to another I thought this was the right choice. Boy was it! IFIXIT' instructions were clear and concise, and the tools worked really well and were of a high quality.
I decided in the end to continue with a tried a true drive and I bought a Crucial M500 240gb model and I am very happy with it.
Mijn oplossing
The repair went fantastic. Really easy and smooth. Taking the cowling out in step 7 was challenging. Part of the plastic that holds the lower screw broke in the the process, but did not affect putting it back in or the screw holding the piece in place.
Mijn advies
My advise would be to be extra cautious with the taking the mac mini apart. I ended up using lots of extra light so I could view the tiny pieces making sure I didn't damage anything.
When reconnecting the wireless card, I found it really easy to work on connecting the cable first, and then feeding it back into place as I moved the card and the plate back into alignment with the screw holes. (See step 10).
In addition I wanted to simply clone my old drive and my new one together. A great way was to use a program called "Carbon Copy Cloner". You can download it and use it for free for 30 days. As I love Time Machine I only needed it for a one time disk cloning. The program allowed me to copy the my old disk to the new one while I was booted into the operating system. Then select the new drive as the "boot disk" in the system preferences and restart. Amazingly fast and I have had zero problems with this process. I didn't immediately format my old drive until I was sure everything copied over. *Important* After the cloning an important piece is to rebuild the spotlight index, as it will still be referencing all of the files on the old drive.
One more note. With the Crucial Drives, I talked to a customer service rep about Trim support. I was told that their recommendation was simply to let my computer run at least one day of the month all night. In an idle state the drive has a trash cleanup process that will go through and perform the required maintenance.
