Mijn probleem

in quick succession I broke the LCD on the 17" Macbook Pro due to sloppy handling, and I shattered the glass front on my iPhone 5.

Both were not yet at the end of their life/usefulness so I decided to fix both myself.

Mijn oplossing

things went pretty well. Finished both repairs in about 3 hours (while watching TV). I consider myself pretty savvy with things like this, but even still, each repair presented challenging moments.

On the Macbook Pro, I underestimated how hard it would be to separate the LCD panel from the frame of the display housing. This took a lot patients and delicate coaxing.

on the phone, I encountered two issues.

1. due to the screen being shattered, the step of using the suction cup to remove the glass was especially hard. I needed to cover the screen with packing tape in order to maintain suction. Then the screen popped off very fast and sorta exploded. I thought I had destroyed most of the parts I was supposed to detach and reuse. I then carefully pieced everything back together and thankfully found nothing had actually been damaged, but it was a scary moment. This 'explosion' seemed to be due to the great extent that my screen was shattered.

2. the removal of the home button ribbon cable was very hard and I damaged mine in the process. While it still worked, the actin on the button was not quite the same, so I bought a replacement (that I have yet to install).

Mijn advies

iPhone Screen Repair:

1. you can use packing tape on the surface of your shattered screen to allow the suction cup to achieve proper suction.

2. a severely shattered screen can come apart into pieces when being removed, so be very careful.

3. just buy the $15 home button ribbon cable when you buy the screen and count on replacing it. Given my experience I would say the average person is at least 50% likely to damage it during screen replacement. I would rather spend the $15 dollars than be stuck with an non-working phone while I wait for the ribbon cable to be delivered. Not to mention paying the shipping cost twice.
