After having a YLoD for ~ 8 Months on an original 60GB fat I decided it was time to either buy a slim or tear this guy apart. Had far too many memories lugging this unit around with me anywhere I moved just toss it in the garbage (HS, College, first and second apartments and finally the house!).
Repair took me about 2.5 hours with some interruptions, but overall was not too bad. Make sure to blow out any loose dust while you're in there...it's well worth spending the extra time to clean all the nooks and crannies as the dust is a leading contributor to why we were in this mess in the first place!
1) Give yourself more than an hour
2) use a screw tray (or muffin tin) as there are a lot of screws
3) have a large, clear work space and keep things organized
4) air dust the heck out of that case and even parts you aren't working on. when's the next time you'll be cracking into your PS3 again? Exactly.
Instructions are great, so follow them and you'll be all set.
BTW, the kit is well worth the cost if your second guessing the quality of that...Arctic silver ceramique 2, decent heat gun, and a pretty nifty bit set (with a few torx heads) alone are worth a decent amount if you don't already have them. This kit is well thought out and provides all you need (sans an air duster).
Overall, very satisfied. It will be a few days of break-in time before I start gaming on it again and ramping up the temps, but so far so good.
