Installing MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2011 Dual Hard Drive

Mijn probleem

I want to boost my MBPro to its limits so I want to swap SATA to SSD and still use my 750GB SATA as added internal storage. Upgrade Memory from 8GB to 16GB. My system is QuadCore i7 it has more cpu power but less memory and I/O. So I decided to give a boost to my MBPro instead of buying another $2k+ MBPro.

Mijn oplossing

Parts I ordered for my Late 2011 15'' MacBook Pro,

- From www.ifixit.com => Unibody Laptop Dual Drive / Upgrade Kit

- From www.crucial.com => 16GB kit (8GBx2), 204-pin SODIMM Upgrade for a Apple MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2011) System

- From www.amazon.com => Crucial M500 240GB SATA 2.5-Inch 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal Solid State Drive CT240M500SSD1

Total Cost: ~$342 vs ~$2k+ new MBPro :-)

Repair was successful, I replaced all 3 without any issues had clean install of OS on new SSD I used all repair manuals from ifixit and also following tutorials to complete my whole repair along with clean installation of OSX Maverick.

I did face following issue when installing Maverick to new SSD - Clean install - Workaround is,

http://aaronkondziela.com/2013/11/this-c...

After following the instructions on creating install media for Mac OS X Mavericks, I repeatedly got the error message “This copy of the Install OS X Mavericks application can’t be verified. It may have been corrupted or tampered with during downloading.”

You simply have to set the date on your computer before you attempt the installation.

1. From Utilities menu, pick Terminal

2. Set the date using the command: date 110216472013.53

3. (Optional) You can get an actual current date from another machine in the Terminal with the command: date “+%m%d%H%M%Y.%S”

4. Then type exit to exit the terminal, or command-Q. The installer comes back up, and all is well.

- Thanks, Jonathan! =)

Mijn advies

Installation was very easy. I suggest to download ifixit App on any of your iOS devices for reference while you are doing the repair. There are glues for 2 cables, speaker,camera cable(small thin cable next to fan) and optical drive SATA connector cable so be gentle when pulling those cables.
