17inch Macbook Hard Drive replacement
5 - 10 minuten
Through no physical trauma to the computer, the hard drive started to complain of having "bad blocks" and being "corrupt". I ran Disk Utility and it fixed it, but the problem came back the next week. So i made sure my external Time Machine backup was up to date and continued using the laptop. After becoming corrupt increasingly frequently the Hard Drive eventually wouldn't start up. I ran Disk Utility from internet recovery mode and it found corrupt blocks and fixed them. The next time it happened Disk Utility could't fix it, so I ordered a new Hard Drive, and some specialist screwdrivers that ifixit.com said I would need.
The replacement job was the easiest thing ever. The hard drive was out and the new one installed in less than 10 minutes (5 of which were removing a bunch of dust and fluff from the inside of the computer). I started in recovery mode again, formatted the new drive and the chose to restore from a Time Machine backup. I went to bed because obviously restoring all your files takes a while. When i woke up, the laptop was alive and well like nothing had ever happened. Except now the hard drive is twice the size. Awesome!
BACK UP REGULARLY onto an external hard drive, and don't hesitate order a new hard drive, replacing them is easy.
