Power Supply Pop - Late 2009 iMac 27

Mijn probleem

I bought a hard drive from OWC where they PROMISED it was the correct one with built in temp sensor. NOPE. I installed the drive and fans ramped up to Full speed. They told me to fix it with software, but that is not a good solution. Well because I had to keep going in and out of the computer, the last time I did I FORGOT to unplug it. And as all the stars must have aligned, when I unplugged the vert sync RIBBON cable from the LCD panel power supply it just happened to flop down onto the main power supply and blew it out!!! Talk about SPARKS and BAD LUCK. Yes it was my fault, but if OWC gave me the right instruction on the drives I would not have had to go back into the computer so many times.

Mijn oplossing

I bought a used power supply from ebay, but then I thought the power supply is a super critical part in a computer for safety and stable operation. So I went to IFIXIT, found the power supply and ordered it for overnight deliver. The power supply arrived, installed and when I powered up it worked!!!! Phew! You guys are awesome!!!

Mijn advies

One of the other parts I ordered when all of this happened was (593-1149) (sorry! from another company as I did not know if you carried it). This is an optical drive temp sensor. It is an external sensor. I unplugged the hard wired temp sensor from the hard drive and CPU board. I then stuck this new sensor on the hard drive and plugged into the CPU board where HD temp sensor was plugged in. VOILA!!! The system worked, the fans are working correctly and my Mom has her system back. Wow this was a close call. I thought the system was toast after that accident. Lessons learned. 1. ALWAYS UNPLUG THE COMPUTER BEFORE OPENING NO MATTER HOW RUSHED YOU ARE. 2. BEWARE OF THAT VERT SYNC RIBBON CABLE. IT CAN BE EVIL!!!
