PS3 Fat YLOD. After six years my PlayStation died during the middle of game play. Having an original with full backwards compatibility I had no desire to go buy a new slim now that the 4 is out. I also did not like the idea of losing all my save data. Googled the issue and it led me to ifixit. $47 shipped was definitely worth a try.
The repair went pretty well. It would have been helpful if the guide told you how long to let it cool prior to applying the thermal paste. i gave it 20-25 minutes. A few things to note. First, the repair took much more than an hour. Maybe I was extra careful but I would lean more to three hours. Second, my PlayStation was assembled slightly different than the guide so you have to adapt a little. Last, the screwdriver set I received did not reach the first screw in the guide. Had I not have had my own I would have been dead in the water.
I highly recommend the magnetic writeable project tray ifixit offers to keep all the screws straight. Double check your surface is level prior to the heating process. mine was perfectly level at the start but being a single middle leg table, the weight of the components spread across the table got it out of level. Use some paper under your support box to make it level.
