RAM for Two Laptops Plus an SSD for One

Mijn probleem

My wife's laptop had only 2GB RAM, so it "needed" an upgrade to 8GB. Mine had 4GB, but I wanted more, and an SSD as well, just because.

Mijn oplossing

The iFixit photos worked well for me, and my wife's laptop was up and running inside of 15 minutes. I had to clone my laptop HD to an SSD that I had formatted in an external cheap housing, after which the SSD booted fine. The iFixit photos and instructions carried the day, once again, so that I was able to install RAM and SSD easily. My wife's laptop is now incrementally faster, and mine is really fast. FYI - when cloning a drive on a slower system, it is advantageous to disconnect your network or turn off your Airport so as reduce the number of processes that can slow your system. In my case Little Snitch started putting up dialog boxes while I was out of the house, ultimately interrupting the cloning process, and making things go slower than they should have.

My repair experience went well, as I already had a wrist strap, grounded work mat, a cleaned up work area, and the clear iFixit instructions. I suggest however, that you (iFixit) seriously consider shipping semiconductors such as RAM in the grey/silver ESD shielding bags, rather than the pink anti-static bags. Pink bags don't generate static charges, but they also don't shield against strong external electrostatic fields. As an engineer in the semiconductor industry, I've had numerous trainings on such topics.
