Repair a Tango'd MacBook Air-repace the AirPort/Bluetooth Board
Mijn probleem
My clumsy daughter accidentally spilled Tango (Sugary Orange Soda) on the top right of the keyboard of her MacBook Air.
After period of drying out, all seemed to be working okay, apart from a complete lack of Wi-Fi. Click on the Wi-Fi menu and all you got was 'No Hardware Installed'
Ran Apple's built in Hardware Test (the extended test), which it passed without any problem. After viewing ifixit's tear down of the late 2012 MacBook Air, I thought it was a fair bet that it was just the AirPort/Bluetooth Board that was faulty.
Ordered a replacement AirPort board and Pentalobe screwdriver from ifixit and received it within just a few days, which I thought was pretty impressive as it had to cross the Atlantic.
Mijn oplossing
So, cleared a space on our kitchen table, fired up ifixit's app on my iPad, loaded the guide for installing AirPort/Bluetooth Card and flexed my spudger.
The Pentalobe screwdriver worked like a dream. I'd read loads of reviews on Amazon for cheap screwdrivers that either broke or failed to work properly. Glad I opted for a quality screwdriver from ifixit.
Following ifixit's guide, this turned out to be a simple fix. Just a matter of unscrewing the back, disconnecting the battery, unscrewing a single screw on the AirPort card, popping the antennas and carefully replacing the sticky card with the new one.
After reassembling the laptop and booting up, it was obvious at the login screen that the fix had been successful, visible Wi-Fi bars in the menu. We have timed access on our Wi-Fi network (use an Apple Time Capsule), so had to use AiPort utility to add the MAC Address of the new Airport card.
The MacBook has been repaired for a little over a week now, and the Wi-Fi works well, good range and reliability.
