I asked my neighbour if I could borrow his Xbox, he said he had one I could have. Only one issue is it came with the RROD. I didn't know what that was, but I work with PC's so said no problem I'll fix it.
I didn't know that it was such a big problem, but the solution is relatively easy.
Once I did a bit of research I was skeptical at best, I didn't really think I could fix this problem. There's always miracle stories when dealing with broken electrics but in my experience the Xbox my neighbour had given me was dead. When you switched it on it did nothing but flash the 3 red lights. Dead.
Well I thought it was worth spending some money on just for the experience. I took apart the Xbox by following the instructions online, and could immediately see the cooling was definitely an issue. I ordered the RROD kit from ifixit because it looked the best one I could find.
Once the kit arrived I quickly heated up my heat gun and gently toasted the mainboard. I was still thinking that it won't work. Installation of the kit was straight forward, the online guide was spot on.
Once I had reversed the instructions and put the Xbox back together I plugged it in and held my breathe. No red lights, booted straight up. It works!!!
Although the Xbox is easy to take apart, look online for a guide. The one I received from my mate was in pretty bad shape because they didn't know what they were doing.
