Crucial M4 SSD into Mac Mini '12: [almost] yummy
vjevtic -
Mijn probleem
I was about to buy myself a brand new iMac, you know, the thinny one? However, when I realized Apple had gone one step further in prohibiting easy user access to such elementary things as RAM or disk drives [bugger], I decided I would build a configuration of my own... hence the Mini i7!
As I knew I could pry it open almost completely, the end objective was to beef up the base configuration with a max of RAM [16GO] and a 256GO SSD (excuse me for my French here ;-)...
Mijn oplossing
The opening and replacing steps went as a snap, mainly thanks to the provided guide on iFixit [ !!! YOU GUYS ROCK !!! ] and the "Mac Mini Dual Hard Drive Kit", which arrived in Paris in less than 10 days.
Everything went right until I booted the system up to proceed to restoration... small freezes (one every minute or so) made me first think I had blown it up with my big fingers :-/
But after reading all the fora I could stumble upon, and after updating the SSD firmware - which reduced but didn't stopped the computer to freeze, I soon realized I had to go back in the little Mini and swap the two disks in order to put the SSD in the lower compartment so it could be recognized by my system as "Disk0"... Crossed fingers... Crossed toes... Eyes... you name it: the configuration is now bloody fast with no freeze at all.
Mijn advies
When inside the Mini, I strongly suggest moving the existing HDD down to the upper compartment (yes, I DO mean what I write ;-).
In order to achieve this, you'll have to unplug the HDD and use it with the SATA Hard Drive Cable provided with the iFixit kit. The SSD must be connected to the original SATA cable. Hope this works for you as it did for me. Bon courage !
