When is a dead hard drive not a dead hard drive? When it's a dead HD cable! Apple store genius diagnosed my blinking folder on startup as a dead HD, and wanted $170 to fix it. I said no, I'd fix it myself, and bought a new HD at Micro Center. Went home, installed it – no help. Put the original HD in a USB enclosure and booted my Mac off it, and Googled the problem. Found out that HD cables often go bad. Ordered from iFixIt.

A screwdriver with a magnetic head makes placing those tiny screws much easier.
