The PS3 resurrection and the long kiss hello.

Six months ago my wife noticed that the PS3 wouldn't come on and soon discovered that the cause was the dreaded "Yellow Light of Death" (YLOD). After having the system for four years we had accumulated a ton of saved game, and other data that we didn't want to let go of so we decided to go ahead and fix it. We scoured the internet for days searching for the cure. Soon we found ifixit, and after a bit of procrastination (our specialty) we went on ahead and decided to resurrect our beloved PS3, A.K.A. the third member of our little family.

Overall the process wasn't that difficult. I completed the disassembly of the system using only the video on youtube because the ifixit site was down for maintenance when I decided to start the repair. Despite the lack of detail I was able to take the PS3 apart without any problems. I decided, however, to wait until the next day to make the actual repair using the online guide. I went through the guide and found that the instructions were straightforward, concise, and well-illustrated. I got everything put back together with no problems, and when I turned the system on and it actually came on, I nearly shed a tear. I then kissed the system (after wiping away the excess dust) for several seconds. I think my wife got a little jealous, but she was too excited to really care.

TAKE YOUR TIME AND GO VERY SLOWLY. The PS3 is a delicate instrument, so treat it like a lady (if you don't know how now is a good time to learn). Be sure to reconnect the fan to the motherboard; I forgot and got an overheating warning shortly after celebrating my success. I had to take it apart again, which went much more quickly the second time around, and reconnect the fan. It's been running strong for the last couple of days. I suggest backing up your data if you haven't already as soon as the system is up and running again. I went a step further and upgraded the hard drive, too (from 80GB to 320GB). Good luck!
