Mijn probleem
One of our 21.5" Intel iMac workstations suddenly started running really slow. I mean, really slow! The Apple Hardware test said there was problem with the hard drive so we opted to try replacing it.
Mijn oplossing
I ordered the drive and the tools required (suction cups to remove the iMac glass), printed the instructions and off we went. The drive replacement went very smoothly except for reconnecting the drive temperature sensor cable. I had read elsewhere that the mid-2011 iMacs used a proprietary hard drive and that I might have problems with the temp probe. Sure enough, the probe has a plastic notch and the new drive did not have a corresponding slot. I called iFixit and it was recommended that I file down the notch on the probe connector and install third-party software to control the fan speed. I went with HDD Drive Fan Controller software and everything seems to be working fine.
Mijn advies
The trickiest thing about this replacement was working with the tiny connectors that connect the LCD screen to the motherboard. Other than that, replacing the hard drive in out Intel iMac was relatively easy and took maybe 30 minutes start to finish.
