As many people do I bought an Ipad 2 from craigslist used. I knew the LCD worked sometimes and other times not so I bought it cheap. And when I went to see the device the screen had just the backlighting working but no display. I bought it hoping the repair would not be difficult. When I dismantled it to find the intermittent issue - of course the digitizer shattered at the last 1/4 inch where it was stuck fast. I heated it up with the heat gun and most came free except the last 1/4 inch when it shattered. The intermittent issue was the cable entering the logic board and I just pushed it in harder and it worked fine from then on. I replaced the digitizer and all was well. I tried contacting the original owner to remove their Apple account from the device as it was working now. But of course they had moved and they were not returning emails (The email account was in the Ipad and that is what I used to try to contact them). I used the device as is for like 1 year UNTIL the last software update where the device all of a sudden asked for the password --which I did not have. Never worked again--Icloud lock as they call it. So it sat for months until I could find an affordable logic board. Tried to find a deal on the internet but many other logic boards were on sale with the Icloud lock as well. These boards are unusable except for maybe a surface mount part or two but of course you need special equipment to remove the parts. And the youtube videos of people removing and replacing the IC that holds the password was not real practical as the devices with the solder underneath need special equipment and processes to replace the part. I finally found the logic board on ifixit at a fairly affordable price.
The repair went well as the digitizer was held on by tape and not by the Apple company "super glue process". I just pried the digitizer loose and slowly released my tape that I used to glue it down. removed the 4 screws around the LCD and the few screws holding down the logic board. Of course I was ESD grounded to prevent problems.
When the unit was reassembled it powered up right to the desktop screen and not the complete setup from the beginning--which surprised me and was great. I entered my Wi Fi information and logged onto the apple account to finish the setup of the device.
So far working great--all functions work--sound-cameras-etc.
When trying to remove the digitizer for the first time--on a device never worked on before-expect the digitizer to break--if you apply enough heat around the edges and keep it hot it might come loose and not break--but be prepared anyway. Try not to flex it too much. Digitizers are super cheap anyway so don't worry. I replace two digitizers on Ipad 2 and Ipad 3 and the aftermarket ones seem to be as good as the original.
I bought some double sided tape on a roll that supposedly is made to glue down smart phone and tablet screens and it works ok--after putting tape all around the screen and reattaching it place a heavy weight for a day or so to push the screen down. Might not work perfect but will make the device usable again.
