Mijn probleem

It all began with the click of death on the hard drive. I taught it was an easy repair for my client. Changing the hard drive, à 15 minutes work

Mijn oplossing

The client bought a new ssd drive. When i instaled it i had to réinstall all the OS from the recovery mode but after 2 hours of download and installation process, it failed. I did it again. Maybe there was a connection problem i said to myself. But, same result at the end. I was seeing the hard drive in the disk utility program, i was able to format it, but unable to install osx and make it run.

I then put the new ssd drivee and installed osx from my computer and i succeed. I put back the hard drive in my client computer but it was not starting at all. I tried different boot mode, same result.

Something was definitely wrong. So i began searching on the internet to find info about that problem. I found a guy who was having that problem and it was due to the data cable of the drive. By friction with the body of the computer on the cable it was worn.

I tried to verify the cable. Took it off, reinstalled it and started the computer again, leaving it open and holding the hd in my hand. It succeed to boot. But as soon as i moved the hd the os froze.

I was then pretty sure it has something to do with that cable. I took out a magnifying glass and began to inspect the cable deeper and guess what? There was something worn but i could't see it because it was a very small defect. (pictures)

I ordered a new cable, received it 14 days later and put the new data cable in place. Restart the computer and it was done. Everything was working perfectly.

Mijn advies

Check other component when there is a hard drive failure.

Één opmerking

I'm just curious, could you have placed electrical tape over the damaged spot in the cable until the replacement cable came in? Just as a temporary fix or to verify that this is actually the problem?

You see, I have been facing a lot of issues with "bad hard drives" even right out of the box, but if I put them in a USB cradle (to make internal drives into external drives or for data recovery, transfer from new to old, etc.), I can install the OS, boot off the drive (holding option during startup), everything. However when my HDD is inside the MacBook, hooked up to this cable, Disk Utility will see it, but during OS installation (if I get that far) I ALWAYS end up getting an "Input/Output error". Every time. I'm just thinking of trying to see if I have any damage to my cable and tape it up to see if I can get it to work. If so, I'm going to buy a replacement here at iFixit.

What do you think? (Or anyone)
