Mijn probleem
My friend's Xbox was giving him the RRoD so I got one of these kits to fix it. As I opened it, it became clear that someone had attempted to fix it before (apparently he had gotten it from a friend that tried to fix it) The previous fixer had removed the four thermal pads but neglected to replace them and had also done a poor job applying the thermal paste.
Mijn oplossing
I applied the new thermal paste, four thermal pads, and two heat sinks that came with the iFixit kit and bolted it back up for him. He tested it, but it was still giving him problems. I told him I would take it back and try re-flowing the solder but I also suggested he could try the "hot towel treatment" -- that is, wrapping the xbox in a towel and leaving it on for about 15 minutes. He decided to give it a try and it all seems to be working now!
Mijn advies
While the Xbox is apart, you will probably want to try re-flowing the solder under the chips. There is a guide available on this website for doing it.
I would also like to request that iFixit would start selling a "booster kit" that only contains the consumable parts in their repair kit so I can work on other friend's Xboxes. Like the thermal pads, heatsinks and X-clamp screws. I don't need to pay extra for tools that I already have!
