Macbook Pro Mid-2012 Hard drive SATA cable
Mijn probleem
One random day, about a year after owning my Macbook Pro (Mid-2012), I got the spinning wheel of death (Kernel panic). I turned off and on my computer, and a folder with a question mark appeared. I went to the genius bar. A tech thought it was a File Vault error, and started to decrypt my hard drive. However, when I got home, the computer froze, and when I turned it off and on again, the question mark folder appeared. I called tech support (Apple Care), and was told it was probably a faulty hard drive cable. I did not want to lose my data. I did not do a backup in a month, and had made a lot of new Excel spread sheets with involved mathematics. I decided to repair the computer myself.
Mijn oplossing
I ordered the hard drive cable with a bracket to save time. I had all the screw drivers already. I used youtube as the guide. I winded up buying a 2.5' hard drive enclosure as well, just to make certain it was not a hard drive error. I replaced the cable, and I also upgraded my Macbook with a 1TB HDD/SSD hybrid drive. I used command r to boot up my new drive, and transfered all my files. It took about 3 hours, but was worth it.
Mijn advies
I now backup my hard drive once a week to an external drive (every Sunday), and purchased an on-line computer backup, just in case it is my hard drive that dies next, instead of the cable. I am thankful to people that filmed their repair and uploaded it to youtube.
