Mijn probleem
After three good years of service it was my Xbox 360's turn to display a solitary red ring with the E79 error. A quick websearch suggested that this could be fixed by reinserting hardware peripherals, such as the hard drive. Upon reboot I got the dreaded three 'red rings of death', the night before the birth of my second daughter. Was this a message from on high?
$130 fro Microsoft to 'sell' a refurbished console was not acceptable. The iFixit videos proved that I could resurrect my console for under $17 with some household tin foil and my father-in-law's heat gun. So far so good. MY Xbox has been faithful to me.
Thank you once again iFixit for coming through for me with excellent thermal paste videos.
Mijn oplossing
With the help of the iFixit Xbox 360 RROD tutorial, it was easy to dismantle my console saftely. It gave me a chance to dust off all the internal components too.
Placing tin foil around to capacitors helped isolate the GPU and CPUs from the intense heat of the heat gun. It was the only non flammable item I could find at short notice to reflect some of the heat. I appeared to work.
Wipes and isopropyl alcohol were great for removing the old thermal paste. Household plastic wrap was ideal for applying the artic thermal paste evenly.
Mijn advies
I paused every ten seconds or so during the four minute heating of the processors, just to avoid overheating the capacitors. So in reality it was more like five minutes.
