iPod 5th Generation (Video) Battery Replacement

20 minuten

Moderate

Mijn probleem

The battery to my iPod classic was draining very quickly. Seemingly I would use it for just a short time and the battery was down 50% or more. Always on a limited budget, and a firm believer in not discarding things unnecessarily, I chose to try to do the fix myself.

Mijn oplossing

The repair went well. The pictures, particularly the close-ups, the encouraging advice on the Guide really helped. I don't think I would have been able to do it without these helps. I took longer than the reported 20 minutes mainly because it was a challenge to get the cover off. (I never did anything like this before. Also nicked my finger when the plastic tool slipped.) The iPod opening tool didn't work for me in lifting up the "brown connector latch". I used regular small angled tweezers and gently lifted up the brown latch by positioning it on either side and gently pulling up. I really wonder if Steps 7, 8 & 9 should be labeled as "optional". After doing these steps and removing the old batter, I saw that I could have done it without these steps. To me, the less unnecessary fiddling around with the components, the better it is. So far so good. The cover is back on, battery is charged and I played it for a few minutes. Battery is good.

Mijn advies

It may help to get a magnifying glass to see those components better. Have a pair of tweezers handy. I had the guitar pick ready, but I really didn't need it to open the iPod. Also, reading the Step-By-Step Guide from beginning to end before taking the iPod apart was a help. If anyone has a broken device, I will definitely recommend them to consider ifixit before mourning their loss.
