Mijn probleem

Like so many others, the battery on my 7-year-old iPhone 4 would no longer hold a charge. I whined to my running buddy about needing a new phone. She told me her phone had the same problem, and her young teen replaced the battery for her. I had no idea such a daring thing could be done! I did a Google search, found iFixit's website and YouTube videos (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYvjuWg0...), and got out my credit card. The liberation kit + battery arrived a few days later.

Mijn oplossing

Great -- then Horrible -- then Great! I admit I was nervous about messing up my phone. It's my lifeline for work, family, friends, homeschooling, and so on. First, I backed up and synced my phone on iTunes, just in case. Then, I carefully watched the YouTube video again showing how to replace the battery (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYvjuWg0...). I laid out a white cloth on my messy table to make sure I didn't lose any screws or tools, turned on my brightest lights, got my magnifying glass ready (I'm sorta old), and took a deep breath. I switched the phone to silent and shut it off. It was easy to remove the star screws and take off the back. Phew! I can do this! I boldly went after the screw connecting the battery to the phone. I thought I was unscrewing it. And unscrewing it. And... it didn't budge. I saw teensy metal shavings on the screwdriver. Oh NO! The screw was getting stripped. I tried my eyeglass repair screwdriver -- too big. I tried a little knife -- that stripped the screw more. Tweezers? No go. Aaaugh! Now what? I went back to the iFixit website and searched for advice. I saw several people had the same thing happen to them. Most recommended using fingernail clippers to grip the screw's head like pliers and twist. By golly, it worked! The screw loosened. I switched back to the Phillips screwdriver from the iFixit kit and the screw came out easily. Next step, pry out the battery. Not so easy! I was surprised at how much force it took to break the bond of the glue holding the battery in place. I was glad I had seen another video about that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYYdbk3U.... I was also glad I found a third video that showed more about how to put the antenna back in place (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1nR_Tbs...). I got the new battery in, reseated the antenna with tweezers, got the stripped screw back in, replaced the phone's back and star screws, and was much relieved to see the white apple appear when I pushed the power button. It's like I have a new phone!

Mijn advies

For iFixit -- please reshape the Phillips screwdriver so it doesn't strip the battery screw.

For the next person doing this repair, if the battery screw doesn't turn right away, STOP before you strip the screw. Get your nail clippers and use them like pliers to loosen the screw.
