Mijn probleem

My MacBook Pro suddenly began sounding like a jet plane getting ready for takeoff.

At first I thought it was the hard disk, but after researching the symptoms online, I learned that the hard disk is on the left side of the computer. The noise was coming from the right side, so I suspected the right fan.

I downloaded smcFanControl (www.eidac.de), and, sure enough, the noise pitch followed the fan RPM.

Although Apple's estimate to replace the fan was reasonable, they quoted a 3 to 5 day turnaround. Not wanting to go that long without the computer, and since it was still usable, I decided to order a fan and attempt the repair myself.

Mijn oplossing

Start to finish, the repair took less than 30 minutes. If you have replaced, for example, an iPhone battery, this is a snap. However, even if you've never cracked open a computer, this might take a bit longer, but it should not be very difficult.

By the way, it looks like replacing the hard disk or the left fan should be equally easy, requiring just about the same amount of disassembly.

Mijn advies

Make sure you have the usual stuff - good bright lighting, a magnifying glass, decent mini-screwdrivers, and, of course, rule number one, patience.

Slightly magnetized screwdrivers make the screw replacement job easier. A small spudger is useful for detaching the tiny ribbon cable connectors. I used the one that came with my iPhone battery replacement kit, but you can get one at any computer parts store. A small pair of tweezers is helpful when reattaching the ribbon cables.

You'll be removing six or seven different types of tiny screws, so reassembly will be easier if you print out the replacement guide and number each different type. Use small correspondingly marked containers - an egg carton, small spice bowls, whatever works - to hold the screws.
