The earpiece speaker on my iPhone 5 failed and I ordered a replacement part and the necessary tools to install it. Unfortunately, using the simple suction cup, the display separated abruptly and the display ribbon cable was damaged. Of course I had to order a new display and that repair went well.
The simple suction cup screen removal tool requires a great deal of force to separate the display and if it separates abruptly, as it did in my case, the risk of damaging the delicate ribbon cables attaching the display is very high.
Use the suction cup removal tool with extreme caution. The two-cup plier tool is probably worth the extra money as it will limit the travel when the case separates. I tried the technique described by some users where pressure is applied to the case in the vicinity of the earphone jack but this didn't work in my case. I suspect that lots of perfectly good displays are damaged using the single suction cup removal tool. ifixit could help by strengthening their warning about ribbon cable damage when removing the display. The guide might benefit by instructing users to read other people's comments before proceeding.
