Did you know that even with a case, if you drop your iPhone 5 too many times the screen will crack? Yep, it's true and that's how I developed a crack on the corner. "No big deal" I thought since it wasn't in the viewable area. Well I guess fate would have me replace it anyway since a couple weeks later my phone did a swan dive out of my hand, completed two and half flips with a twist and finished in a belly flop, FACE DOWN, on the sidewalk!
Since I'm an experienced DIYer and have fixed multiple iPhones and other electronic gadgets before, the repair was pretty easy. This was my first iPhone 5 repair and separating the display from the chassis took a bit more effort than I expected. I used so much force that the "key ring" on the ifixit suction cup I had from a previous repair started to bend. I had to replace it with something stronger and then was able to use it properly. I was able to repair it in the end and now have a working screen. One disappointment though is that the replacement screen isn't as bright as my wife's iPhone 5 that was purchased on the same date.
I would be very careful using the suction cup to lift the display as quite a bit of force is needed. It can be easy to overdo it and potentially rip the display cable from the board on the inside causing further damage.
