Repair was a success. I bought the tool kit, but I ended up needing a smaller phillips head screw (which luckily I already owned) to remove the screws on the metal clip over the battery cable.

Mijn advies

First, this is the most money I've ever had to pay for an iPhone 5 replacement battery - my last one was about ~$10 on Amazon and lasted for a year and a half, but I couldn't find one this go-round. In retrospect I would not have detached my screen from my phone to replace the battery. In the past I held the lcd connected at a ~ 80 degree angle and replaced the battery (this is more difficult technically - especially if you've never removed the battery before, but from where I stand, the less steps the better). The only hang up I had in the process was getting the screen properly attached again. Also, it's a good idea for anyone doing an iPhone repair to have an extra set of screws and a magnet to hold the screws you take out as you go. They are the size of sprinkles, and you will literally never find one if you drop it on the floor.
