My almost 2 yr. old iPhone 5 had started acting funny- it would randomly shutdown when the battery indicator had reached 30% or so, telling me it needed charging. It was also draining the battery at a rapid rate- for instance, unplugging the phone at 5 a.m., sending only a few texts and e-mails, and the battery would be at 70-75% by 10 a.m.! By 3-4 p.m., the battery would go into shutdown once or twice a week.
I ordered the battery kit with tools, and decided to give it a shot on my own. (I figured if an Apple Genius could do it at the store, why couldn't I??) I watched the repair guides here, and also a few on YouTube, and when the battery arrived 2 days later I was ready to go! Everything was perfect- kit had all the right tools, and 20 min. or so after starting the repair, the phone was powered back up. The battery solved the problem! No more shutdowns, I can unplug the phone at 5 a.m., and at 10-11 p.m. I still have 20-30% battery life left!
If you are reasonably handy, you can do this- there's no need to pay 60-80 dollars to have someone install the same battery you can buy here! Just watch the vids, and make sure you do this seated at a table over some sort of cloth or towel (I used a micro fiber towel), the screws are EXTREMELY tiny and you don't want them rolling away, chances are you would never find them! The disassembly is really easy, the most difficult step is removing the glued in battery- don't pry against anything in the phone, work the spudger tool underneath the battery in different areas and you will feel it start to loosen. Also, you CAN remove the battery without disconnecting all the cables to the screen, I just held the screen and body with my left hand while working on the battery with the right hand... huge timesaver!
