iPod Video 60/80 GB Replacement Battery

This iPod is old. 5th generation 80 gig. Wouldn't turn on, and when I opened it up—multiple wires were broken, and the hard drive was disconnected and just loose in the casing.

Since I had never done anything like this before, to say I was overwhelmed is quite the understatement.

This website was very straightforward and made the process seem very simple. However, once I opened up the iPod, I realized I had quite the situation on my hands. Replacing the battery was fine... then I realized I had to buy another part, which unfortunately, this site did not have in stock, so I had to go to another site (a simple Google search will give you many different fix it yourself sites). So while waiting the week for the extra part to arrive, I just left it on my table and stared at the innards, trying to figure out how anything electronic works at all. How anyone figured this $@$* out from scratch is completely beyond me.

Headphone jack part arrived and I got to changing it. Easy peasy... again, this site is so wonderfully put together. Figuring out how to reattach the hard drive is another story. I was feeling impatient, and just by looking at the pictures from the original instructions on the site for replacing the battery, and having stared at the insides for a week, I figured it out and got everything reattached. I snapped it all back together... unlocked it... and pressed the center button... the hard drive whirred to life and the screen lit up. All my old playlists and music from high school are just beaming back at me...

Having never done anything like this before, I am so ecstatic and now have a wonderful curiosity about how to fix electronic devices.

Just stick with it. Patience and a steady hand are key. Even if it doesn't end up working, there is so much to learn from taking something apart and putting it back together. Lively up your curiosity and go exploring! This was such a wonderful journey and experience.

My trusted companion for ten years, one of the first ipods, had a battery that would no longer hold a charge. The ipod played well in my Bose station but could not play on battery power. I chose ifixit because of the reviews and the wonderful website that helped me identify the battery for my 60GB ipod.

It was scarey because I am so attached to my old reliable ipod. The instructions were great. I was patient and I agree it is a challenge to open the case and going slow with care was the key. All went well. I did not have a guitar pick and only used the tools from the kit.

A plastic tweezers in the toolkit to disconnect and connect cables would help a great deal.

My iPod 5th generation has not turned on for a over a year and I had all my great music on it! Took it to the Apple store and got the response: "We don't support this older technology anymore."

Great! The plastic tools it came with are good for taking the iPod apart, but to remove the battery port, you'll need a small/tiny flat head screw driver that is not included in this package.

The battery finally gave out after all these years. I could only listen while it was plugged in to power, no iTunes for sync'ing music

Reviewed instructions from IFIXIT.com and followed along. The first part of splitting the case was aggravating. I needed something like a guitar pick as I saw others post, so I found something that would work. I got the bottom open just enough to insert my small flat piece of plastic and started working the case, done... Once you get going and it's pretty easy. Take your time. Followed the rest as the instructions says, really 20 minutes.

Use a guitar pick or some flat nylon piece once you get going on splitting the case, it helps. The rest is as the instructions says, no guesswork involved. Take your time, the hard part is that first step and the pick does help.
