Apple Recalls Some 15-inch MacBook Pros for Overheating Batteries, Check Yours Now

An internal view of the MacBook Pro's battery.

Apple announced today that a “limited number” of 15-inch MacBook Pros sold between 2015 and 2017 are affected by a battery overheating issue and may pose a fire risk. Apple will replace the batteries free of charge.

Specifically, this issue affects some Mid 2015 MacBook Pro 15″ Retina models. You can check your model by heading to the Apple menu and clicking “About This Mac,” but your best bet is to find your serial number and punch it into Apple’s support page for the recall here. If you’re eligible for a free battery replacement, it’ll let you know, and you can book an appointment at an Apple store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.

We can’t say exactly what’s causing the issue (our Mid-2015 model is not affected), but considering the 2015 MacBook Pro’s design was mostly unchanged from the prior model year, all signs point to defective batteries rather than a larger thermal design problem. So as long as you get your battery replaced, you should be golden—be sure to check out our tips for getting the best service from the Genius bar before you go.
