Set your digital multimeter to detect AC voltage.
If your multimeter has advanced options, ensure the dial is turned to a minimum ACV 200 setting. If you are unsure how to use a multimeter, consult the manufacturer's instructions or read this guide.
Test the black (hot/power) and white (neutral) supply wires for voltage and verify no electricity is detected from the ceiling outlet.
