Aufgedruckt war die Modellbezeichnung DMG-01 (steht für Dot Matrix Game, also Punktmatrixspiel). Zur Energieversorgung brauchte der Game Boy entweder vier AA Batterien oder einen Netzadapter, der später wenig überraschend in Rappelkisten verschwandt.

Er trug zwar nur eine Modellnummer, es gab aber über die Jahre hinweg eine Reihe von verschiedenen Modellen mit leichten Unterschieden bei den Platinen.
