This is a GPU issue on these machines, full stop. Back in the day they were failing within 6-18 months on a routine basis. The ones dying now "made it" but are going thorough late stage failure, or were repaired with the revised GPU and made it a bit longer.
The easy way to tell is if it does it on a external display too, it's the GPU -- if it's isolated the screen is bad, but the GPU failure being a 100% guaranteed failure with time makes it a non repairable defect.
Pull the HDs for data recovery and toss this one. It's a lost cause, especially if it's rocking a nVidia GPU. Some DO still work with the Intel GMA board and I have a survivor Compaq with the nVidia chip myself, but I know it's a ticking time bomb and I treat it accordingly. If you brought this to me to repair I would decline the job and pull the hard drive(s) for you so you can get your data off.
