No NVMe Detected After RAM/SSD Upgrade on 2026 Steam Machine - lspci C

Hey everyone,

I’m running into a brick wall after trying to upgrade my 2026 Steam Machine and could really use some hardware-level insight.

What I did:

I opened up the system to add a second 16GB stick of RAM and upgrade the internal NVMe SSD. I was incredibly careful, used a plastic spudger to disconnect internal components, and ensured wall power was pulled well before touching anything.

The Problem:

When booting into the SteamOS recovery USB to install the OS on the new SSD, it fails to detect the drive entirely, giving the error: !! /dev/nvme0n1 does not exist -- no nvme drive detected?.

Even worse, when I swap the original, known-working NVMe SSD back in, the BIOS still reads the storage slot as completely empty.

Troubleshooting I've already done:

Isolated the RAM: Completely removed the new 16GB stick to rule out dual-channel memory training issues or PCIe lane interference. Running just the original factory RAM right now.

Physical Seating: The SSD is fully inserted (heard the click), laid completely flat, and properly screwed down.

Ribbon Cables: Since the SSD slot sits on a daughterboard, I inspected and re-seated the bridging ribbon cables. They latch smoothly, sit perfectly square, and there are no visually bent copper contacts.

Boot Logs: The system passes POST perfectly fine with all green [ OK ] flags, but black-screens right after initializing the graphical interface because the installer script can't find a target drive.

Terminal Diagnostics: Popped open Konsole in the live environment and ran lspci. The system successfully lists the Radeon graphics, Qualcomm Wi-Fi, and USB controllers, but the Non-Volatile memory controller (NVMe) is completely missing from the list.

It seems like the CPU is entirely blind to the storage PCIe lanes or the M.2 slot isn't getting power.

Before I officially write this off as a blown motherboard power rail/micro-fuse or an invisible hairline fracture in the ribbon cable, has anyone else encountered this absolute storage blackout after a dual RAM/SSD upgrade? Are there any specific daughterboard quirks or hardware resets I'm missing?

Don't know but if possible you may be able to check if power is getting to the slot.

At least this will narrow down the problem to either a power supply problem or something else.

Same issue here. Took it completely apart and the issue persisted. Was able to get it to work after a few more tries but the cable seems to be finicky or possibly have a bad connector. Had to put in a support request because I don't trust that it won't stop working.

I would check the part of the ribbon cable that connects to the motherboard (the opposite end from the M.2 board). I also upgraded my RAM and SSD and had a very similar experience. I swapped to a 2280 M.2, and it wasn't recognized in the BIOS; I then swapped back to the M.2 it came with, and it still wasn't being seen. I'm not sure if there's a cleaner way of doing it, but I had to get it back down to just the two-piece main board, undo the retention bracket, separate the two main boards, clip the ribbon cable connector back in, and then put it all back together.

My NVMe wasn't working from first power on, so I stripped the machine down to follow the ribbon cable until I discovered it routed to the other side of the mainboard. I didn't have any thermal paste or any pads / putty so I decided to leave it alone. At that point it goes beyond troubleshooting and strays into the realm of a service, so I contacted Valve and initiate an RMA. The replacement machine arrived yesterday.
