superdrive logicboard port fried

heres an update to my original question about a superdrive logicboard port being fried. i finally got the macbook and when the wife let me have it for a minute i did some checking to see if i was told correctly. now i was told by the original owner that he had a professional check the computer and said the port on the logic board was fried for the superdrive. so now i get it and when it boots up, the superdrive starts up and makes the normal drive sounds. and it shows up on the system report. now, it hasn't read a dvd or anything yet, it sucks it in, makes some normal sounds, then abnormal sounds then spits it out. no error messages or anything. now, its my understanding that if the port is fried, the superdrive shouldn't work or even show up in anything. am i safe to assume this? i personally don't care if the superdrive doesn't work, ill replace it with a bracket and put a hard drive or ssd there like i did my pro. best upgrade ever. thanks all.

i went ahead a bought it but at the moment i haven't received it yet so i can describe the inside yet. this is going to go to my wife who has been wanting a macbook of her own. i recently add a ssd in my macbook pro and moved the factory drive to an enclosure in the superdrives spot and its great. so great i would like to do the same with the upcoming macbook but with the port problem, i don't know. not sure i can justify spending the money to fix just one little problem when the rest of it works.

It's a logic board replace...component replacement is not really a DIY task (requires special tools, solder, skills) plus a new optical drive...if you seldom use the optical drive (MacBookAirs don't include built in optical drives) you can use it as is.

If you need an optical drive, get one that you can boot from (a FireWire connection). Here's the one I really like and it can be used on your other computers and/or your next machine: http://www.amazon.com/LaCie-301484U-Ligh...

I see from your comment that you have another Mac Book Pro. You can hook them together in Target Mode using a firewire cable and holding down the "T" key on boot up. You can them transfer data or do a clean install using your disk drive on her machine. Here's how to do it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
