The cd should be able to install the operating system to that laptop, however, you must keep in mind whether that's a 16 bit or a 32 bit cd and whether the laptop runs better with one or the other.

Also if you can, backup any drivers on the laptop before you install the operating system, if you can't, that's not an issue, as you can download the drivers you need here. http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/e...

You can see which drivers aren't working by going to your Device Manager and from there can pick and choose which ones you need to get it started.

16-bit Windows XP? That's not a thing.

Another consideration for Bernard is that your E6400 may not have a license for Windows XP. There should be a sticker on the bottom of your laptop with a serial number, that's the version of Windows that you have a license for. You can use a Dell windows installation CD with that version of Windows.

Definitely download the network drivers from the site Gary linked to, because you probably won't be able to connect to the internet on your E6400 when you first install Windows until you install the network drivers.

Also, a friendly internet etiquette tip - don't type in all caps. It gives people a bad first impression of you. :)

you could also consider installing Ubuntu. This is a Linux operating system. There is no issue with this op it is free. It operates with icons or as we call them launchers. You do have to make a cd or dvd depending on how large the download is. This op system also installs all the drivers needed automatically. If you need help you can get plenty of help at this site

www. linuxforums.org

You register and then you can ask any question you have.

To download the op you go here

ubuntu.com

you have to use an ISO writer to write it to the cd or dvd. If you don't have an ISO writer go to google and put in free ISO writer. If you have win 7 it has one.

Hope this helps you.

Just some information. I've been using this system since about 1997 and have no problems with it when I had a problem I just reboot and it goes away. Oh yea since you are going to use it on a laptop I found that it's better to use an external mouse.

Also as far as viruses are concerned it doesn't typically get viruses.

Good luck.

Lou
