USB-C Port - Suspected looseness/fault, replacement parts & repair

Howdy Ifixit crew and community!

I've had my Edge 30 Pro for a couple of years now without (major, anyway) issues, but just in the last few days or so, I've noticed it acting strange with charging. Having previously had iPhones long ago (and so, having to do the old "magic angle" trick with many a Lighting cable) it feels like a positioning problem, but it's very slight.

What happens when I plug it in is this. About half the time, it connects and charges normally. The other half, it connects for a second (it buzzes, I see the on-screen animation, and the battery indicator displays charging) but disconnects almost immediately. Occasionally, it will do this a second time, after which, no amount of wiggling gets it to reconnect.

At home I have three chargers around my desk; the original 30 Pro's charger, a 45W charger for general use, and a laptop 65W charger. The 45W and 65W repeatedly showed the above behaviour. I got more luck out of the 30 Pro's original 30W charger, so filled it up with that before I continued testing. From there, I started to notice that I could get it to charge in almost any angle, but, if I wiggled it slightly directly upwards (bending cable in the direction of the screen) it would drop in/out of charging, but mostly continue to charge (rather than refuse to charge at all at any position.)

So as I said - it reads like a dodgy cable, but with 3 chargers doing different versions of the same things, I assume it's the port.

So! Anyone else had issues like this? And does anyone know if it's fairly easy to get parts to replace the charging board, should it be that? I haven't done a repair on a live device before, only old phones I've switched away from, so this is a bit more worrisome as I'd need to ensure I don't break the screen and do re-seal it sufficiently enough to restore (at least, most of) it's waterproofing. I assume it's screen off > cables out > daughter board replacement.

Thanks in advance everyone!

I couldn't find a charge port replacement video for your model, but here's a teardown video that should suffice.

The charge port board is seen being removed at 4:44 minutes into the video.

You don't have to remove all the components as shown to get to it, but ensure that you do disconnect the battery from the systemboard as soon as it is accessible so as to prevent any untoward electrical problems from occurring during the repair. Remember to reconnect it, as late as possible when reassembling the phone.

Search online for 5P68C20260 to find suppliers of the charge port board that suit you best. (examples only)

Thank you for your help! Is it feasible to assist with an article if I do have to replace the port myself? Would be happy to at least draft something!

@samofham

Yes here's how to do this for the device

Thank you!! FYI, and for anyone else who found this thread, the correct teardown is this one from the same fella:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-VwmreK...

I had completely forgotten that the Edge 30 Pro is called the X30 in China, and Moto being a Lenovo company and Lenovo being Chinese, that means a lot of the media/original model info follows the Chinese modelling.

I'll do more testing, see what I can order, and come back here to make an article if I end up replacing that sub board!

What is the model number of your phone?

The video I linked was for an Edge X30 Pro which I hoped was near enough to the model you selected as the device

The Edge X30 Pro is model number XT-2241-1.

The video that you linked is for an Edge X30 which has model numbers of XT-2021-2 and XT-2021-6

The charge port board part number for an Edge 30 Pro (XT-2021-1) is 5P68C20260

I couldn't find the charge port board part number for either of the other X30 models but there's an Edge 30 Neo which is an XT-2245 which has a USB charge port part number of 5P68C21409 and an Edge 30 Ultra which is XT-2241 which has a USB charge port part number of 5P68C21264.

Given that all of the Edge 30 model variants, charge port board part numbers are different, presumably they're not exactly the same and are specific to the particular model variant, so be aware of this when ordering. Check what it shows on the board itself

I have an Edge 30 Pro, which I know is also branded as the X30 (though pro or not, I'm unsure) overseas.

From the device's info directly: motorola edge 30 pro (XT2201-1)

The device in the video I linked is Edge 30 - it has the same exterior chassis as what's in my hands right now, while the one you linked is the S30. Mine has 3 cameras in an oval camera bump, yours two in a rectangle. Good old Lenovorola with more product models and names than they know what to do with, each with minor differences between them!
