Got battery and kit from iFixit, innards didn't match what was shown. I replaced the battery and the phone chimes when it's powered but the screen only shows two green lines in the lower left corner with some touch sensitivity -- that's all! It worked fine when I took it apart. Help! I'm a technically competent experienced 84 yr old person.

Unfortunately my experience with a screen coming apart from the frame like yours did was not encouraging. Once the OLED had been separated it came up with serious display issues and I ended up having to replace the screen.
My suspicion is that the frame also serves the purpose of protecting the delicate connections from the motherboard to the circuits etched into the glass, and the pressure of the opening tool damages those connections causing the kind of problems you're seeing.
Sorry to say I'm fairly sure you're going to need a new screen.
P.S., yes, I do get notifications when you tag my username. It's been a busy day patching a kid-size hole in the sheetrock at my son's house. Yeah, don't ask.

@oldturkey03 nat2 has another question regarding the difference in appearance; I've suggested that the display has separated from the screen frame.
