Repair documentation for the 3rd generation 11" iPad Pro (model numbers A2377, A2459, A2301, and A2460).

iPad got stepped on and now it's bent, faceID not working properly

So my iPad (iPad Pro M1 11-inch) got stepped on and now the frame is bent. Everything is working except for the faceID which says camera covered in the lock screen even when nothing is covering it. When hard resetting the iPad I’m able to set up a faceID once but after that it says faceID is not available. I’ve tried talking to an Apple Advisor and they ran a diagnostic test on my end but didn’t see anything wrong with it. There are also two bright spots when the background is a dark color like black where the bend was. Is there any way I can fix this with everything intact?

Definitely not. If it says camera covered, it’s probably repairable because it’s just something out of alignment. if it says not available, then something has failed electronically, likely due to torn off due to mechanical abuse.

You need to replace the rear case, reconnect and likely resolder the camera/dot projector part and that’s definitely not DIY.

For some reason it says that its not available only the second time I try to set up the face ID, after hard resetting it I'm able to set it up again (doing the head moving thing twice). Would that still mean that theres something wrong with the dot projector?

That’s hefty damage believe it or not! I’d take it to a repair shop. You’ll need a new back housing at the very least. That bend is putting huge stress on the screen and everything internally . Face ID could be screen damage or board damage, flex damage just No way to be certain without opening it up. You’ll need to follow all the guides to fix it yourself! 🫣iPad Pro 11" 3rd Gen

Yep I'm planning to take it to a repair shop since it seems like I won't be able to fix this by myself. I just wanted to know what could possibly be wrong underneath the screen. Do you think that there a big possibility for the screen to crack if the people in the repair shop tried to open it? I don't know if I should just suck it up and use it normally or to let it be fixed.

The white areas are pressure building up underneath on the LCD. Screen glass isn’t supposed to bend. It will only get worse, it may even break on its own if left. The only repair is a full back replacement. Just shop around and get some quotes , and hope nothing else fails in the meantime quite possibly it will. I’d shut it down completely until it gets seen. Also make sure anything important is backed up just in case.
