Why are my headlights turning completely off when is set to automatic

At night, when I set my headlights to automatic sometimes it turns the headlights off randomly. I have to either switch it to lights on or pull the lever as if changing from low beam to high beam for the lights to turn back on.

Have you checked that the light sensor on the dashboard is clean and unobstructed?

The sensor determines if the lights are to be turned on or off when the auto headlight function is activated.

Hi jayeff,

Yes, I forgot to mention that it was the first thing I checked. It is clean and free of any obstructions and yet the issue remains. It is jarring to be driving at night and have the lights go completely off on me. Note. This never happens when it is not in the auto mode; I can get the lights back on quickly by just pulling the lever towards me as if I'm changing from low to high beam.
