Replaced HD but now won't power up

I replaced HD using repair directions but now I don't get anything when I press the power button. Checked to see if keyboard connector was loose which it was, reseated, reassembled still nothing. Yes the battery and charger are plugged in.

Any suggestions?

It does nothing? No tone, no noises, no lights?

The model is PBG4 15.2/1.67Ghz-128/1GB (2x512MB).

The AC Charger is working with a green light at the plug.

I replaced the hard drive after it crashed while my daughter was making an imovie. The Genius bar could see the HD and it failed the verify and repair. I removed the drive and put it into a USB external case and continue to hack at that but that is a separate issue for now.

I got a new 250GB drive thru Ifixit and followed the directions.

I have checked the power switch for operation using an ohmmeter and it looks good.

I have carefully inspected the top case cable and connector with a 7x magnifying loop and can not see any damage.

I have tried resetting the Power manager unit to no avail.

I pulled the new HD back out and inspected the connector an how it is seated on the logic board.

I am down to a PRAM battery, it was never changed. Would that battery go dead if the the PowerBook was apart for a week?

The PowerBook took a hard fall about a year ago and is dented in the corner where the charger plugs in but it has worked fine all that time. So it could be the DC in board. Ifixit doesn't have a board for it.

Is it likely that I static damage the logic board? I was careful but didn't use a static mat or wrist ground.

I haven't put the old drive back in to see if the new drive I got is bad but that seems that I would at least get a noise from the PowerBook when I tried to power it up .

Thanks for all the help so far.

Brian, your pram battery was never changed so it's normal it could be dead after all your PB is a five years old computer. Use your ohmmeter to verify the pram battery charge. Should be a DC measure but I don't know the voltage a good battery should read. I think it's 3.6 volts but someone could correct me if I'm wrong.

Looks like the problem is with the connector on the top case cable where it connects to the logic board. I was able to get it started by pressing on the connector while pressing on start button (hoods up start). I will check it out under a microscope at work tomorrow. Probably have to replace the cable.

Sounds to me like you have no power at all. Do you get a light on the AC charger? What color is it? Why did you replace the hard drive? What was it doing before the hard drive replacement? Please look in the battery compartment and give us the exact model you have, it makes a difference.

I just went through the installation guide to refresh my memory. This really sounds like the keyboard not being plugged in. If I remember correctly there was another port that the keyboard could plug into. See if where your plugging in corresponds to the photo. Couldn't hurt to look at the connection on the keyboard also.

This is a power issue not a hard drive issue. Try a power manager unit reset then check you AC adapter (problem probably not related to the AC adapter cause the PB should also power up from the battery if the battery has a charge). Since your PB is an old model the problem could also be related to a dead pram battery if it has never been replaced. Other components can also be the culprits: bad top case cable or connector, faulty power switch, faulty DC in board, dead logic board.

Checked the PRAM battery and the actual battery voltage is 3.27 VDC at the pins on the battery leads. Any Idea if that is enough? the battery is labeled as a 3.7 vdc

pram battery seems to have a normal charge.

After close inspection it is a damaged trackpad cable at the logic board end. I must have raised the top case to high and seperated one of the connector pads from the cable. The uestion I have is which is a better repair approch: Buy a poor top case and salvage the cable or buy a better topcase and move my keyboard?

May be stating the obvious but did you re-check the connecter cable to the actual HD?

It dosen't do anything no lights, fan, nothing. One odd thing is the cd/DVD drive dosen't suck in the disk. Is there a bios battery or something like that could have gone dead? I had it apart for about a week wating for the drive. I didn't pull the HD cable off and recheck, I guess it is worth a try.
