The system doesn't recognize or doesn't know when to hibernate

I just purchased a used MacBook Pro Mid 2015 with a brand new Apple Replacement battery installed and noticing some odd behavior with the SMC?

First the MacBook was shutting down within seconds after logging with the battery still at 100%, 90% and even 60% (running off battery). So I thought it was an SMC issue so I let the battery drain and calibrate 3 times, reset the SMC with a with and without the power cable plugged in.

I was able to login fine with a power cable plugged in but it seems the battery was not able to either supply a healthy amount of power to keep the MacBook on? Or maybe just too new?

The SMC reset seemed to help with calibrating the battery but it still just shutsdown before hibernating when the battery reaches a low point. I get a notification to plug in the power cable though which is good! So there's been a little progress in that sense where the Macbook only shuts down due to actual low battery instead of a fully charged one. Maybe I just need to keep using it so the battery and SMC can develop a more regular pattern reading?

I can't imagine this to be good for my laptop though? And I'm still not sure if the MacBook can stay powered on after the login screen without a power cable. I'm almost too afraid of trying again out of disappointment. : (

Attached is a reading of the battery after it is fully charged and plugged into the power cable. When running the terminal with the prompt log shows

--predicate 'eventMessage contains "Previous shutdown cause"' --last 24h I get the number 0 which means "0 Battery disconnected. Check power supply/battery on a laptop, or the power supply for a Mac without a battery. On a laptop, the Mac should hibernate before the battery becomes so discharged it is unable to shutdown correctly, therefore if you see this shutdown cause on a laptop it may indicate a hardware issue with the battery or with the battery controller for reading the charge. Try resetting the SMC by connecting the switched off computer to power, holding ⌃control+⌥option+⇧shift and pressing power." and also -60 if I let the battery get to 0% without plugging in the power cable

"-60 Battery fully drained. Mac should hibernate before the battery becomes so discharged it is unable to shutdown correctly, therefore if you see this shutdown cause on a laptop it may indicate a hardware issue with the battery or with the battery controller for reading the charge. Try resetting the SMC by connecting the switched off computer to power, holding ⌃control+⌥option+⇧shift and pressing power."

@zeekom - Let’s get a snapshot of CoconutBattery so we have something to work with. You’ll fill a link for it in my Answer above. The free version is all we need but once you get it I’m sure you’ll end up using it!

@danj Hey Dan, thank you for getting back to me, I really appreciate it. I actually spent a solid couple days looking through the ifixit forum and reading your very helpful and insightful tips and advice. I want to attach a screenshot of CoconutBattery readings but Im not seeing an attachment button in the reply box here, only in the "add your answer" section. Can you please help me with that, I apologize for not knowing.

@zeekom - You need to post an answer, better yet is make a fresh question with your details and the snap.

Well, its not good! ☹️

This batteries BMC logic is bad! It's not reporting the age of the battery or even the date it was made. There is a dialog between the Microprocessor unit within the battery and SMC when values are missing in the dialog its sorta like how when you have a dialog on a cellphone that is loosing signal in spurts you don't get what the other person is saying cleanly. While we can often fill in the missing dialog in our heads, SMC is not that intelligent!

You need a new battery here, sorry!

@danj Wow thank you, that's very helpful to know Dan! I seriously wouldn't have even been able to figure that one out myself. I thought it was a bit strange that there was no such information but now that you mention it makes more sense. Strange that this was a brand new Apple replacement battery, perhaps the seller didn't know. Hopefully it's still under warranty and I can just replace it again. I'm assuming there's really no other way to fix this, and continuing to use the Macbook may result in further issues? Is it safe to use until I replace it again with a new battery?

@zeekom - Apple doesn't sell batteries on the open market for this series! Only if an authorized service partner or Apple Store and only during a repair by them as they need to return the used part.

Batteries sold by iFixit or others are all third party often made by the same companies Apple uses to the same specs. But often not as well Q/C'ed. The cheapest batteries are often rebuilds where someone takes the cells apart and rejoins still working cells into a battery set or reusing the BMC logic. Sadly, that was common during COVID as the BMC chip was in short supply and the Q/C of the Chip House making them also dropped.

So while the seller will state OEM thats a misnomer! With rare exception, as they just can't get the real Apple Q/C'ed battery.

@danj So what you're saying is there's no hope for me in terms of finding any replacement battery that will actually work for this specific Macbook Pro model, or be completely functional enough to keep it powered on? Although I must say that I have not experienced any further shut downs after the login screen, the automatic shutdowns when the battery reaches 5 to 0% instead of hibernating continues.

@zeekom - No not that! Just the battery you will find is 3rd party not from Apple directly.

Just make sure the outfit you buy from has been around a good while and offers a good warranty.
