Certain Keys not working on Keyboard

I just replaced the MacBook 13" Model A1278 Unibody Upper Case(backlit) Order #138350, Part #IF160-001-1 that I purchased from iFixit and Certain Keys (A S D F G H J K L Z X C V B N M , .)are not working. I reseated the keyboard ribon 3 or 4 time's to make sure the problem wasn't there. I hate to have to take it apart and send it back to find out that it's a simple fix I could have done or missed. Please advise.

Thank you, Charles

What was going on with the old keyboard?

door

My old keyboard was working fine. I just wanted the backlit function which my old key board didn't have. I've now notice that the keys at the top of the keyboard aren't working as they should. The F1, F2, F3 , F4, F5, F6, F7 and F8 keys aren't working either. The F9 and F10 key are functioning as the F3 key should. The F11 key causes the screen to shrink up. The F12 is functioning as the F4 key should. This leads me to believe that this keyboard isn't for this model (A1278) as advertised.

Well this doesn't sound right. There may be a firmware fix you need to install when changing to the keyboard. I would contact Ben Eisenman with iFixit. He's the best parts exchange guy I know. Here's where to contact him: http://www.ifixit.com/Info/contact

Hello! Sorry for the late response (I've been ill, and my outgoing mail isn't working so well right now).

Strange! That's a lot of keys to not function. We haven't had problems just connecting the backlit upper case just like the non-backlit (with the exception of the one backlight cable that is added, which attaches to the logic board).

My first advice was to check the cable, but you did that already.

Next, go to System Preferences and select "Keyboard and Mouse." The fourth heading should be "Keyboard Shortcuts." Try selecting "Restore Defaults" to see if this restores the keys to their correct functionality.

If this doesn't fix the problem, try booting in Safe Mode (refer to here for the prodedure) and test the functionality to see if any third-party things are affecting it somehow (I doubt it, but it doesn't hurt to try!)

Unfortunately, if that doesn't work, your best bet is to set up a return for the part.

Please keep us posted with your findings!

I have the same prob after spilling juice on the keys. I imediatly turned the comp. off and turned it upside down. After opening it up and cleaned out the keys. Yes, I had to remove about 50 micro screws to get to the keys.My Mac pro 13" works, every key on the kepad works...but the "A S D F G H J K L l" keys. I reopened it and check the ribbon but all looks fine. Are the any fix for this. BTW I did "Restore Default" on the Keyboard Shortcuts.

Thanks

In my case I had to send back (RMA) the upper case that I purchased and got a replacement. The seconded upper case worked just fine. I never figured out why those keys didn't work.
