after charging my ipod, i tried connecting it to my pc but it wouldnt work. i pulled it out and tried to turn it off but it seemed to hang. i cant turn it off anymore nor can i have it play. what should i do?

Try a hard reset before doing anything that involves opening the case. Press menu and the centre button together and hold for a few seconds and the apple should appear, and the system should restart. With luck this should be enough to fix the problem.
